ITALY: ROME AND VATICANO (I)

We spent our first afternoon in Rome visiting Saint Peter's Square and Saint Peter's Basilica. In the evening we visited La Fontana di Trevi and enjoyed the lively streets around the Pantheon and Piazza Navona, one of the areas of Rome I liked the most.

Fontana di Trevi at night

For five days we enjoyed the fantastic sightseeings of Rome and we walked for hours through the streets of this wonderful city.

Day 1 - 19th september 2010

Visits of the day

- Saint Peter's Square *- Saint Peter's Basilica *
- Fontana di Trevi (at night) *
- The Pantheon and surroundings (at night) *- Piazza Navona (at night) *
- Castel Sant' Angelo and Via della Conciliazione (at night) *

* Strongly recommended
Saint Peter's Square

One of the two fountains of Saint Peter's square, each one located in a focus of the ellipse

Saint Peter's square is really large. You realize when you have to walk from one extreme to the other

Saint Peter's Basilica
La Pietà, one of the masterpieces of Michelangelo Buonarroti, can be admired inside Saint Peter's Basilica

The impressive baroque baldaquin of Bernini becomes even higher when you approach

Overview of the main nave of St. Peter's. It's really large and it seems a palace rather than a Basilica because of the floor of marble and the gold on the ceiling and walls

Walking around the Vatican

On typical cobbled street or Rome near St. Peter's Square

Fontana di Trevi

Fontana di Trevi at night, always crowded

Around the Pantheon

The remains of the Adriano's Temple is now the facade of the Stock Exchange of Rome, which is located in a small and peaceful square called Piazza di Pietra

One of the really lively streets near the Pantheon. I really liked the atmosphere of these streets

Pantheon

The surroundings of the Pantheon is always crowded and the atmosphere is really lively. It's a perfect place to have dinner

Piazza Navona

The Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi in Navona Square, another masterpiece of Bernini

Piazza Navona at night

Castel Sant' Angelo

The Sant' Angelo bridge led us to Castel Sant' Angelo

Via della Conciliazione

Spectacular view of the Saint Peter's Dome from the through La Via della Conciliazione
